5 Simple Ways to Infuse Self-Care on Any Budget

“Psst… Can you hear me? Hey, hi can you hear me now? Yes, you!”  This is your body constantly talking to you. The question is; can you hear it?

Your body’s  quest to give you 100%, it’s quest to give you the best it can, it’s quest is relentless! And yet we most often ignore it! We give ourselves a thousand excuses why we just don’t have time, we can’t afford it, this “other thing” is more important, etc., etc…  And I get it! Trust me, I do it too!

In reality we are simply kidding ourselves. Our kids, our careers, our success, our future-selves and our true potential are all dependent on this. At the risk of sounding harsh, ladies without our health, we really don’t have the ability to surpass, succeed and excel! But… And here’s the good news; it’s easier than you think and we can all do it on a budget! Yay for good news!

But Gina, how? You ask…

There are simple steps we can take every day towards self-care and optimal health. Self-care is really the cornerstone of both health and self-acceptance. I will take this a step further by saying you really cannot have one without the other. Understanding and embracing this concept has been my quest. Through years of experience, trial and error, my very own battle with self-loathing I finally discovered that true health comes from a very deep and safe place of self-acceptance. Self-care is the fastest route to get you here.

Here’s the scoop, the how, the shortcuts and the absolute free ways to do it!…

1. Give yourself permission to do so!

You, your body, your children, and that “bigger-than-you” thing you are here for, deserve for you you to fulfill your purpose. In order to do this, you must come from a place of overflow and not a place of survival.  Start here: Do what you can with what you have today!

2. The #1 simplest thing you can do for your body today: h2O! Hydrate!

Drink enough, drink extra, drink good quality purified or spring water. You are over 70% water, you always need more. Being properly hydrated will help you stay focused, stay energized, stay healthy and help you deal better with anything that comes your way. Ideal is: ½ your weight in oz per day.

3. Take 5-10 minutes in the morning upon waking up to have quiet, focused, mindful time for yourself.

Do this before you check any electronic devices. Check in, clear your thoughts and set your intentions for day. I promise you, this will change your life! (Ok and yes, what if you need to wake up 10 minutes early… it’s only your body and your health we’re talking about, right?)

Here are a couple of ways to go about this:

  • Set a timer for 5-10 minutes: breathe and begin to count to 10. Count 1 on the inhale, count 2 on each exhale. (ie: Inhale 1, 1-2 exhale, Inhale 2, 1-2 exhale, Inhale 3, 1-2 exhale, Inhale 4, 1-2 exhale and so on until you get to 10) Repeat until timer goes off.
  • Set a timer for 5-10 minutes: close your eyes, focus on your breath and ask yourself how you want to feel at the end of the day. Take this time to set your intention for the day.

4. Move your body daily.

Our bodies thrive on movement, our minds and emotions thrive on movement. Especially when we are going through any trying time we needed most. Countless studies have shown how the endorphins released when we move fight depression. I won’t even get into weight gain or loss. It doesn’t have to be elaborate, it’s as simple as going for a 15-20 minute walk 4 times per week. As simple (and fun) as taking a 5 minute “solo-dance party” everyday. As simple as doing 3-5 yoga poses for 5-10 minutes per day. Whatever floats your boat, just move your body a little bit everyday.

5. Last and definitely not least: adopt a nightly ritual that is your “me time” every evening.

Whether it’s a bath with some epsom salts, journaling time with a favorite pen, a self-body massage, getting creative with a coloring book, additional quiet time with some candles, or simply pleasuring yourself before bed, whatever you choose, will be perfect for you at this time. Explore, try different ones, work with the time you have, just make it a ritual and make it special. You will sleep better, you will wake up refreshed and you will be sending a message to both your body and the Universe that you are important, you are a priority and you are loved.
